Creating The Logo.
I started my document by opening Adobe Illustrator and setting a square document, I then added rulers to divide the document into 5 sections which would define the location for the music levels and letters to go later on.
My first screenshot shows that I added text and set it out such that each letter/number fell within its own column as defined by the rulers. I set the colour black for the text as I would change the colours later. I also defined my first box which I would duplicate to form the 'levels' which fell above the letters. I also set the colour of this rectangle yellow.
I then proceeded to duplicate the rectangle, setting is a certain amount of pixels away from the last, and changing the colour to a slightly lighter one that the previous rectangle.
I proceeded to duplicate more rectangles, making sure they were of uniform width apart and fell within the constraints of the ruled sections.
I finally duplicated rectangles above every letter to create a staggered effect which replicates a music levels effect.
After creating the levels, I begun to apply colour to the 'LA5ER' text. I coloured this first so I could use the colours for reference when colouring the rectangles above it.
After applying the reference colour to the lowest rectangles of the design, I then proceeded to begin adding the same pattern to the rectangles above it.
After applying the correct colours to all the rectangles, I added a dark grey rectangle to the bottom of the logo which could be used as a background fill later.
I then selected all the rectangles and text and uniformly increased the size until it filled up the majority of the square container. This is possible as Illustrator uses vector imagery so no pixels are seen by upscaling the image.
I then added the 'FEST UK' text and selected the font to be used which I chose to be Avenir-LT-Std-45-Book, and proceeded to size it accordingly to fit within the logo constraints.
I went into my window menu to bring up the appearance tab as seen below.
I then applied a fill layer which I chose to be a gradient. This is the only way to apply a gradient to text in Adobe Illustrator CC.
After selecting the fill mode to be a gradient, I had to modify the gradient colours to work with my logo.
A selected the reference colour blue and the reference purple to be what my text colour was.
I then proceeded to make the blue and purple take about 50% of the text each, and also made the gradient type vertical by rotating the gradient by 90 degrees.
I finally added a drop shadow to my 'LA5ER' text to make it 'pop' out more so...
... and finally dragged up the dark grey rectangle to become the background image which completes the logo.
As this logo was now in .AI format, it meant I could up-scale it to whatever size I needed without loosing any form of quality.
